Palate — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 19 June 2026

Palate ("we", "us") helps you photograph restaurant menus and translates the dishes into your preferred language. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your choices. We designed Palate to keep as much as possible on your device.

Who we are

Palate is published by Force Fidele Kien. Contact: forcefidele@gmail.com.

What we collect and why

Menu photos and PDFs you scan. When you scan a menu, the image (or PDF) is sent to our menu interpretation provider (Google Gemini) to extract and translate the dishes. Images are sent only to perform the scan you requested. We do not use your menu photos to train models, and we do not retain them on our servers beyond what is needed to return your result.

Approximate location (only during a scan, only if you allow it). If you grant location permission, we use your location during a scan to find the nearby restaurant and match dishes with real photos via Google Maps Platform. You can decline this and still use the app; location is never collected in the background.

An anonymous device identifier. We generate a random identifier stored on your device. It is not linked to your name, email, Apple/Google account, or contacts. We use it to:

Purchase information. In-app purchases are processed by Apple or Google and managed through RevenueCat. We receive purchase/renewal status and a product identifier — never your full payment details or card number.

Saved data on your device. Favorites, recent scans, reviews you write, app settings, and any API key you choose to provide (see "Bring your own key") are stored locally on your device using on-device storage. They are not uploaded to us.

Bring your own key (premium)

Premium users may enter their own AI provider API key. If you do, that key is stored only on your device and used to call the provider directly from your device. We never receive or store it.

Third parties we share data with

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for cross-app advertising.

Data retention and deletion

Locally stored data (favorites, recents, reviews, settings, BYOK key) remains until you delete it in the app or uninstall Palate. Your anonymous scan-usage counter resets monthly. To request deletion of any server-side usage record associated with your anonymous device identifier, email forcefidele@gmail.com.

Children

Palate is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country).

Changes

We may update this policy; we will revise the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, note it in the app.
